Tata Institute of Social Sciences is a premier institute of social science education in South east Asia established in 1936 under the aegis of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust .It begun as the Sir Dorabji Tata School of Social Work as the first school of Social work in the country and today is foremost in imparting education in the social sciences. Renamed in 1944 as Tata Institute of Social Sciences, the Institute went onto be recognised in 1964 as a Deemed to be University by the University Grants Commission. In 2002, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) awarded a 5-Star rating to the Institute, and in 2010 it re-accredited the TISS with an ‘A’ Grade and a cumulative grade point of 3.88 out of 4.00, one of the highest scores awarded to universities accredited this far by the body.
Restructured as an independent school in 2006, the School of Health Systems Studies has been instrumental in responding to the needs of the Indian healthcare system and the challenges faced by it. With a focus on trans-disciplinary research, a strong field presence and evaluation of policy needs the school helps cater to the changing paradigm of health in India.
